The Royal Challengers Bangalore have played the finals of the IPL only on two occasions & both times they’ve finished second best. To reach the finals of this pompous tournament needs stern performances but IPL 2019 has gone the opposite way around for the Royal Challengers. The twelfth season is off to a flier, but for the reds, it’s been nothing short of a disaster. The Virat Kohli led team has lost their first 6 games & have seemed completely out of sorts on the field. Their fielding especially has been abysmal. Drop catches, sloppy bowling & inconsistent batting. Sums up their 2019 season. ‘If we bowl like that, we deserve to be where we are’ – Virat Kohli. The RCB skipper said after conceding more than 90 in the last 6 overs against KKR. That’s a strong statement from the world’s best batsman & a captain who’s almost given up on this T20 franchise. The only team to have lost the first 6 games were the then Delhi Daredevils back in 2013 where the team managed to win only 3 games out of 16. This year the Royal Challengers Bangalore have scored 876 runs and have conceded 1011. Their net run-rate after the completed six games stands at a negative 1.453. What’s in store for RCB? What went wrong & where can Virat’s men improve? Experience fantasy cricket at its absolute best on FanFight. RCB has some quality cricketers in their ranks & their inclusions in your Fantasy Cricket teams might help you win big. Ready to play? BUTTERFINGERS: Catches win matches is one catchphrase that wouldn’t change in time. However, fast-paced or advanced the game of cricket might get. The IPL has got the finest cricketers from all over the world and the fielding quality for some unknown reason isn’t of the highest quality. Teams, on their days, might dive-around, pluck a blinder out of thin air & affect run-outs but the consistency never remains. RCB, this year, have had the worst time on the field. The bowlers have created chances but the men on the field have let them down. Here’s a look at the percentage of the catches taken in IPL 2019 (Source: Cricinfo). The attempts column clearly shows that the bowlers have tried hard & have created opportunities. But at the highest level, 58% catching conversion is simply not acceptable. Against KKR where they should have won with relative ease, drop catches & sloppy bowling cost them the game. HEAVILY RELIANT ON KOHLI & AB DE VILLIERS: RCB spent Rs. 16.35 crores at the IPL 2019 auctions. They bought 9 players for the twelfth season but that doesn’t seem to have given the extra oomph they were looking for. Shivam Dubey, Shimron Hetmeyer & Akshdeep Nath were acquired for a total of Rs. 12.8 crores but how much have they contributed? Shimron Hetmeyer & Shivam Dube have been the biggest disappointments this year. Hetmeyer couldn’t get bat to ball while Dube hasn’t done any scoring barring the six off Lasith Malinga. On the field, Shivam Dube is an extreme liability. He’s neither quick across the turf nor does he have a good throwing arm. Due to the injury before the IPL perhaps? Virat Kohli hasn’t had a bad run but the team’s performance with the bat has made his contribution seem pretty bleak. He’s got 3 scores of 40+( a brilliant 84 against KKR) and is the 5th highest run-getter in the tournament. AB De Villiers is 8th on the list with 173 runs which include 2 fast-scoring half centuries. Parthiv Patel has managed to get a few runs opening the batting for them but all these knocks haven’t paid off because of the sluggish fielding & ‘rookie-like’ bowling. Kohli, De Villiers & Parthiv have scored 62.5% of the total runs RCB have managed. Shows how badly the middle & the lower middle-order have failed. RCB have 8 games to make immense. Can the other batters chip in? YUZI CHAHAL, THE ONLY SHINNING LIGHT: Yuzvendra Chahal has been RCB’s best bowler by a distance. While the leggie has conceded only 6.87 runs-per-over, the others have taken quite a beating. Tim Southee was pummelled over the boundary with aplomb by a certain Andre Russell & Prithvi Shaw took the attack to him in yesterday’s defeat. The New Zealand pacer was picked for a struggling Colin de Grandhomme but was no ever close to his usual best. His figures after 2 games read 6-0-85-1. Mohammad Siraj, Navdeep Saini & Umesh Yadav form the Indian pace attack but they’ve found it hard to strike the right lengths. The trio has been hit for 436 runs in 53 over – an economy-rate of 8.22. Saini has bowled with a lot of heart & plenty of pace but picking wickets at regular intervals will matter the most. Saini also hit the 152 Kmph mark against KKR. Can he come good in the coming fixtures? No team in the history of the Indian Premier League has lost the first 6 games and managed to finish in the top 4. Mumbai Indians lost 5 in 2014 & made it to the playoffs. Pragmatically RCB are out of the tournament, but cricket is as mercurial as a sport can get. A top 4 finish is surely a Herculean task but since when have we started doubting Kohli’s abilities. He’s pleasantly reached a state where he’s understood every players’ potential and will have to lead by an example. How much has he matured as a captain? Only the remaining games will tell.
